The application of passive fire retardant coatings in the shop can improve the quality, aesthetics and safety of the application compared to steel coating in the field.
One important benefit of limiting the fire protection process to the shop environment is that it allows the construction crew to complete construction much faster, reducing construction costs. This faster completion was made possible by eliminating the need for much of the equipment and the hassle of coating the steel after it had been erected inside the structure.
Because coatings are already applied in the shop, coaters do not need to install a complete insulation system around the steel structure to protect the substrate from dust, rain, and snow prior to coating. They also don’t need to invest in environmental controls to ensure conditions are suitable for coating applications. The containment process itself can be time-consuming and prohibitively expensive. In addition, in the shop, applicators can control the temperature and humidity of refractory steel at any time of the year.
